The Coucou Method

LEARN TO HEAR IT.

LEARN TO SAY IT. THEN

LEARN TO WRITE IT.

What if you could learn French the way you learned your first language — by listening, observing, repeating, and speaking before worrying about how words are written?

At Coucou, we believe that learning a language should be an experience, not simply a process of memorising vocabulary and grammar rules. Our approach puts communication first, helping you build confidence in French from the very beginning.
Inspired by immersive, direct language-teaching approaches, the Coucou Method introduces French through images, real-life objects, gestures, and meaningful situations. Rather than relying on translations, we encourage you to connect words directly to their meanings and learn to use them naturally.

French spelling can be deceptive. What you see on the page does not always correspond to what you hear. That’s why, at Coucou, new vocabulary is introduced primarily through images, objects, and context — before the written word is revealed.
You see it. You hear it. You repeat it. You refine your pronunciation until you feel comfortable saying it yourself.
Only then do we introduce the written form through carefully guided activities. This helps you develop a stronger connection between sound and meaning before spelling enters the picture.
First, let French sound familiar. Then, let it make sense on paper.
Learning a word is only the beginning. The real progress happens when you start using it.
Our lessons follow a gradual progression that takes you from guided practice to independent communication.
Step 1 = Le Geste (Practice & Perfect)
Once a new word or structure has been introduced, you practise it through focused activities. This is your opportunity to become familiar with the language, refine your pronunciation, and build accuracy with the teacher’s guidance.
Step 2 = L’Échange (Guided Conversation)
Next, you use what you’ve learned in short question-and-answer exchanges with your teacher. These simple dialogues help you combine vocabulary and grammar in meaningful interactions, preparing you for real conversations.
Step 3 = La Maîtrise (Mastery)
Finally, you put the language to work independently. You respond, describe, ask questions, or create your own sentences using the words and structures you’ve learned. This is where you demonstrate not just that you’ve memorised something, but that you know how to use it.
From repetition to interaction, and from interaction to independence, each stage has a purpose: helping you move towards speaking French with confidence.

Our classroom slides are designed primarily for teachers. They are visual, focused, and intentionally free from lengthy explanations. Pictures take centre stage, allowing you to concentrate on listening, speaking, and interacting rather than reading paragraphs from a screen.
As the lesson progresses, your teacher may add useful notes, which you are welcome to write down if you wish. This keeps the lesson dynamic and gives you the freedom to focus on the language instead of constantly copying information.

At the end of every one-hour lesson, you receive a complete booklet containing the vocabulary, grammar points, useful expressions, and other key elements covered during that session.
Why only afterwards?
Because we want you to experience the lesson with fresh eyes and open ears. When you encounter new French words in context before seeing their spelling, you have a better opportunity to focus on their sounds and meanings without forming pronunciation habits based solely on written forms.
Your booklet becomes a reference for reviewing, consolidating, and revisiting everything you’ve learned — at your own pace, after the lesson.
One lesson. One booklet. One clear record of your progress.

You can explore the complete list of units on our website to discover what each level covers and where your French journey can take you.
But the exact words, expressions, and activities you’ll encounter during each lesson are revealed as you learn them — not beforehand.
This is intentional. We want you to arrive curious, listen attentively, discover new expressions, and enjoy the satisfaction of understanding something you couldn’t say an hour earlier.
Every lesson brings a new discovery. Every discovery brings you one step closer to speaking French.

Welcome to Coucou French

At Coucou, we don't want you to spend your lessons simply reading about French. We want you to experience it, speak it, and gradually make it your own.
Listen first. Speak with confidence. Read with understanding. And discover French, one lesson at a time.
